2016 Changes to the Affordable Care Act

Although insurance talk isn’t exactly engrossing to most of us, it sure ain’t cheap. In other words, it’s important to be familiar with the Affordable Care Act legislation and the evolution of its impact on you—yes you—the new mother.

Under this landmark legislation women are granted progressive benefits with regard to maternity and postnatal care and supplies. Specifically, breastfeeding care and support are considered.

Byram Healthcare can process your breast pump order through your insurance.

So you see, this stuff is important and pertinent. As such, we’re talking about it again with a focus on two changes that go into effect this New Year.

Note the following:

In 2016, the minimum penalty for individual mandate non-compliance is going up a lot.

This is important to note for two reasons. If you do not have health insurance you are losing out on advantageous healthcare provisions (things like covered breast pumps!) and the financial penalties you will incur at tax time will hurt your household budget even more this year.

In 2016, the employer mandate will go into full effect.

This is important to note as the healthcare plan offered through your employer might be changing. The ACA has different requirements for employers based on the size of the company and an initial grace period for companies to make adjustments without irrecoverable and unforeseen expense. As we are now more than a few years into the legislation, these requirements are changing, meaning you could be eligible for more comprehensive coverage or afforded an allowance for the private exchange.

This New Year, make sure you know what you're entitled to and what that means. As a new or expectant mother under the ACA, it's a whole new world full of glorious things like...oh, we don't know...covered breast pumps, maybe.
